In my artwork, I strive to capture the vibrant life and emotional complexity of both the animals I portray and the viewer. I represent animals as conscious beautiful beings, yet at the same time honoring the connection we, as humans, create with the natural world. Animals represent many things to many people. For me, I often chose to paint their tranquility, color, humor, intensity and majesty. I paint and sculpt personalities and emotions using animals as my primary subjects.
I paint figures or portraits of individuals whom I am inspired by—usually a family member or friend. My daughter has been a recent subject as her struggle with identity and hair loss as a six-year old female with alopecia has inspired me to paint themes related to her current experiences.
Punch Pour Paint represents the genesis and evolution my artistic (both physical and visual) pursuits.
Punch = Martial Artist. I am a Master Instructor and Coach for Omniform Martial Arts in Denver, Colorado. I began training as a martial artist at the age of 5, and I have been punching, kicking, breaking and swinging weapons ever since. I have also been known to “punch” the air in elation when complete with a new work.
Pour = Sculptural Artist. My first visual artistic love was sculpture and ceramics. From play dough to polymer clay, I have always enjoyed the additive sculptural process. The “pour” refers to my current processes of replicating my sculptural designs in soap, plaster, and resin—materials which all begin as liquids poured into handmade molds.
Paint = Visual Artist. I took on painting in earnest the latest in life, but what started as a hobby quickly became an obsession. I paint or draw almost daily in a variety of sizes and mediums. Acrylic is my favorite medium, but I also use watercolor, oil, and charcoal.
I have an insatiable curiosity and frequently try new methods, mediums and processes.
